Privacy policy

What we collect in the Fun Libs app and on funlibs.app, why, and what you can do about it.

Who we are

Fun Libs is made by Whimsical Works, the name Hallvard Hetlelid and Asgeir Albretsen publish Fun Libs under. Together they decide how your data is used, which makes them responsible for it (the “controller”). Questions or requests: playiagogames@gmail.com.

The short version

  • You can play without an account. If you make one, we keep what’s needed to run it: your email, username, avatar and what you do in Fun Libs.
  • Stories you publish, your username and your avatar are public. Everything else is private.
  • We don’t sell your data, and apart from the ads described below there are no tracking tools in Fun Libs. funlibs.app counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn’t identify you.
  • The free app and funlibs.app show ads from Google. Buying “Remove ads”, the Everything bundle or Fun Libs Plus turns them off.
  • You can delete your account, and its data, at any time, and download a copy of it from the app’s menu.
  • People under 13 use Fun Libs in Kids mode: no account, no personal details, official stories only and ads that are never personalized. See “Children and Kids mode” below.

What we collect

Your account

When you create an account: your email address, username, password (stored encrypted by Supabase, never readable by us) and the avatar you pick. If you play without an account, the app creates an anonymous guest account so your plays and likes are kept until you sign up. A guest account is deleted when you leave guest mode, or if it hasn’t been used for 180 days.

What you do in Fun Libs

  • Stories you write and publish, with their tags, and edits to them.
  • Which stories you play, like and save, who you follow and block, and reports you send about stories or people.
  • The ideas you give the AI story maker, with the date, so we can count how many AI stories you’ve used.

Purchases

Which packs, upgrades and subscriptions you own, and when they renew or end. This comes from Apple, Google or Stripe through RevenueCat. We don’t receive your payment details.

Kept only on your device

Drafts, your recent AI stories, filters and party player names are saved on your phone or in your browser, not on our servers. funlibs.app uses your browser’s storage to keep you signed in;the ads described below may use cookies.

Why we use it

  • To run Fun Libs (to provide the service you asked for): your account, publishing and playing stories, likes, follows, saved stories, AI stories and purchases.
  • To keep it safe and fair (our legitimate interest): handling reports, hiding low-quality or harmful stories, enforcing AI story limits and preventing abuse.
  • To show ads in the free app (your consent, where the law requires it, and you can withdraw it at any time): see below.

We only email you about your account, like password resets. No newsletters or marketing.

What’s public

Your username, avatar and profile, stories you publish, and their play and like counts can be seen by anyone, including on funlibs.app and in search engines. Stories that are mostly blanks are only shown to their author. AI stories stay private unless you publish them yourself.

Who we share it with

We use these providers to run Fun Libs. They only get what they need for their part, and may only use it to provide their service to us.

  • Supabase. Hosts our database and sign-in: your account, profile, stories and activity.
  • Netlify. Hosts funlibs.app. Like any web host, it handles your IP address and browser details when you visit.
  • OpenAI. Writes AI stories. It receives the idea you type and your story settings, not your name or email.
  • RevenueCat. Keeps track of purchases and Fun Libs Plus subscriptions, linked to your account ID, or to a random anonymous ID in Kids mode.
  • Apple and Google. Handle payments in the App Store and on Google Play. We never see your card details.
  • Stripe. Sells packs and Plus on funlibs.app as our reseller (the “merchant of record”). It collects your email, country and payment details to take the payment, handle tax and send receipts, under its own privacy policy. We never see your card details.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics. Counts visits to funlibs.app: which pages are viewed, the referring site, and your browser, device type and country. It uses no cookies and doesn’t identify or follow you across sites.
  • Google AdMob. Shows ads in the app to people who haven’t removed them. In Kids mode the ads are never personalized. See “Ads” below.
  • Google AdSense. Shows ads on funlibs.app to people who haven’t removed them. See “Ads” below.

Some of these providers are based in the United States or process data there. Those transfers are covered by safeguards under EU data protection law, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. We’d only share data otherwise if the law requires it.

Ads

The free app shows banner and full-screen ads from Google AdMob, which uses your device’s advertising identifier to pick and measure them. Where the law requires it, including the EU/EEA, the UK and Norway, the app asks for your consent before any ads load, and you can change your choice any time under “Privacy choices” in the app’s menu. On iPhone, ads are also only personalized if you allow tracking when the app asks. On Android you can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalized ads, in your phone’s Google settings. Google’s own use of this data is described in how Google uses information from apps that use its services. Fun Libs Plus, “Remove ads” and the Everything bundle remove all ads.

In Kids mode, ads are treated as child-directed: they are never personalized, the app doesn’t ask for tracking permission, doesn’t use the advertising ID for ads, and only shows ads rated for everyone.

funlibs.app shows ads from Google AdSense to visitors who haven’t removed them: one beside the page on wide screens, and now and then a full-screen ad when you finish a story (never on pack stories). Google may use cookies to pick and measure them. Where the law requires it, including the EU/EEA, the UK and Norway, Google asks for your consent before any ads load, and you can change your choice through the privacy link Google shows on the site. Sign in with an account that has Plus, “Remove ads” or the Everything bundle and no ads load at all. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

AI stories

When you ask for an AI story, the idea you type, the length you picked and whether it should be kid-friendly are sent to OpenAI to write it. Don’t include anything in your idea you wouldn’t want shared, like full names with addresses or other private details. Under OpenAI’s terms for its API, data sent this way isn’t used to train its models. We keep a count of your AI stories, linked to your account, and the text of each idea for 90 days, after which only the count and date remain. AI stories aren’t available in Kids mode.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your profile, stories, likes, follows, saved stories, plays and AI story history are deleted. Reports you sent are deleted too; reports about you are kept without your name while we act on them. We also ask RevenueCat to delete your customer record. Purchase records are kept by Apple, Google and Stripe as long as the law and their terms require, for example for taxes and refunds. In Kids mode we keep no account data at all: the only thing stored about a story is how many times it has been played in total, with no link to who played it.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive it in a portable format. Email playiagogames@gmail.com and we’ll reply within a month. You can change your avatar and delete your account yourself, in the app’s menu or in Settings on funlibs.app. In the app’s menu you can also download a copy of your data (“Download my data”). Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

If you think we’ve handled your data wrongly, please tell us first. You can also complain to a data protection authority, such as the Norwegian Datatilsynet or the authority where you live.

Children and Kids mode

The first time you open the app we ask for your month and year of birth, so Fun Libs can fit your age. Your birth date is not saved and is never sent to us. Only the answer “under 13” or “13 or older” is remembered, on your device.

If you are under 13, the app runs in Kids mode. In Kids mode:

  • there are no accounts, guest accounts, usernames, profiles, likes or publishing, and no AI story maker. You can only play the official Fun Libs stories;
  • we don’t collect names, email addresses, photos, locations or anything else that identifies a child, and we don’t ask for them;
  • when a story is opened, the app asks our servers for it and adds one to that story’s total play count. Like any online service, our hosting provider sees the IP address of the request for a short time in its security logs. We use it only to run and protect the service, not to identify, contact or profile anyone;
  • ads are never personalized (see “Ads” above), and links that leave the app, buying packs and restoring purchases are behind a question for grown-ups. Purchases are made through Apple or Google, which handle the payment, and are tied only to a random ID from RevenueCat.

You need to be at least 13 to create a Fun Libs account. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and think your child has an account or has given us personal information, email playiagogames@gmail.com. You can ask what we hold about your child, have it deleted, and tell us to stop collecting it. We will check that you are the child’s parent or guardian before we share anything, and then delete the account.

How we protect your data

Access to our database is limited by row-level rules, so you can only read and change your own private data. Connections are encrypted. We choose providers that offer data processing agreements, collect as little as we can, delete data we no longer need, and keep personal details like email addresses out of our logs. If a breach puts your rights at risk, we’ll tell you and the data protection authority as the law requires.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. For bigger changes, we’ll let you know in the app before they apply.
