Play Mad Libs online for free: fill-in-the-blank stories in your browser

Where to play Mad Libs-style word games online for free, with no download or sign-up. Play alone, with a group on one phone, or write and share your own stories.

If you grew up with Mad Libs, you know how it works: someone asks you for "a plural noun" and "an adverb", you answer without knowing why, and a minute later everyone is crying with laughter at a story about a principal who juggled forty spoons aggressively. Fun Libs is the same kind of game, made for phones and browsers. It's free, and you can start playing in about five seconds.

How to play Mad Libs online

  1. Pick a story. You only see the title, never the text.
  2. Fill in the blanks. You're asked for one word at a time: an adjective, an animal, a verb ending in -ing.
  3. Read the result. Your words are dropped into the story and highlighted, so the silliest answer is easy to spot.
  4. Share it. Send the link to a friend so they can play the same story with their own words.

There's nothing to download and no account to make. If you get stuck on a word, the wand button suggests a random one.

Playing online with friends and family

The classic way to play Mad Libs is in a group: one person holds the book, everyone else shouts words. Online, you have three good options.

  • Party mode on one device. Add everyone's names and choose how many words each person fills in per turn. The phone tells you whose turn it is, and when the story is revealed, each person's words are highlighted in their own color.
  • Read the prompts out loud. One person holds the phone and asks the group, just like the paper version. This works well on video calls and in the car.
  • Everyone plays the same story separately. Share the story link in a group chat. Everyone plays on their own phone, and you compare the results.

New stories are published every day, so there's always something to play. A few places to start:

The Mad Libs app for iPhone and Android

Fun Libs also has an app for iPhone and Android, with the same stories, your account and your saved stories. The app adds themed story packs for Christmas, Easter, romance and history. Everything on the website stays free to play.

Online vs. paper Mad Libs

The paper books are great, but they have two problems. Once a story has been filled in, it's finished, and you can only play the stories in the book. An online word game fixes both: you can play any story again with new words, and there are thousands of stories written by other players. You can also write your own, which is the closest thing there is to a Mad Libs generator for your own jokes.
