AI-generated Mad Libs: write a custom story in 15 seconds
Describe the occasion, the people and the inside jokes, and AI writes a fill-in-the-blank story with the blanks already in place. How AI Mad Libs work on Fun Libs, with ideas and tips.
The best Mad Libs are the ones written about the people playing them: a birthday story starring the birthday girl, a wedding story about how the couple met, a work story about the office printer everyone hates. The problem is that writing one takes time, and writing the blanks well is harder than it looks. The Fun Libs AI story maker does it for you. Describe your idea, and about 15 seconds later you're filling in the blanks of a story written just for you.
How AI-generated Mad Libs work
- Open the AI story maker.
- Describe your story idea in a sentence or two: the occasion, who's in it, and any inside jokes. For example: "Emma's 30th birthday. She loves her cat, Biscuit, and always loses at bowling."
- Pick a length. Short is about 8 words to fill, medium about 12 and long about 18.
- Choose kid-friendly if the story is for young children.
- Fill in the blanks. The AI writes a title and a story with blanks like (Adjective), (Plural noun) and (Name 1), and you start playing straight away. The story stays hidden until the end, like any other Mad Lib.
- Read the result, then decide what's next. Play it again with new words, make another story from the same idea, or choose Edit and publish to Community to polish it and share the link with the group.
Already writing a story? In the story editor, Write with AI turns your idea into a draft with blanks that you can edit before anyone sees it.

Why use AI to make Mad Libs?
- It's fast. A custom story for a party usually takes half an hour to write. The AI version takes 15 seconds.
- The blanks are already there. The story uses the same word types as every other Fun Libs story, so it's ready to play straight away.
- It's personal. The details you put in the idea end up in the story. That's what makes a personalized Mad Lib so much funnier than a generic one: everyone in the room knows who Biscuit is.
- You stay in control. Nothing is published until you say so. Keep the AI's best lines and rewrite the rest in your own voice.
Ideas for AI Mad Libs
The more specific your idea, the better the story. Some to try:
- Birthdays: "Dad's 60th. He tells the same fishing story every year and is convinced he can fix anything with duct tape."
- Weddings and bridal showers: "How Sam and Priya met: a broken umbrella, a bus stop in the rain and a very rude pigeon."
- Baby showers: "A day in the life of the new baby, who is already in charge of the household."
- Retirement and going-away parties: "Linda's last day after 25 years in accounting. She guards the stapler with her life."
- Holidays: "Christmas dinner at Grandma's, where the turkey is always late and the dog always steals something."
- The classroom: "A field trip to the science museum that goes wrong when the dinosaur skeleton wakes up." Turn on kid-friendly for this one.
- Date night: "Our first date, retold as an action movie."
- Work icebreakers: "The weekly team meeting, but everyone has been replaced by animals."
Tips for a better AI story
- Name names. Real names, pets, places and catchphrases make the story yours.
- Give it a situation, not just a topic. "A camping trip where the tent collapses" works better than "camping".
- Check the blanks before you publish. If a blank asks for a Noun where the sentence really needs a Plural noun, fix it. Our guide on how to write a fill-in-the-blank story explains what makes a good blank.
- Put a blank in the last sentence. The funniest stories end on a player's word.
- Make another if it doesn't land. Make another about this writes a new story from the same idea.
- Test it before the party. Once you've edited it, play it yourself with the play button in the editor. Test plays don't count as plays and don't show your story to anyone.
AI Mad Libs vs. writing your own
AI is a great starting point, but it doesn't know your friends the way you do. The best results come from using the AI for the structure and adding your own jokes on top. If you'd rather write from scratch, see how to make your own Mad Libs.
Privacy
When you use the AI story maker or Write with AI, the idea you type is sent to OpenAI to write the story. Don't include anything you wouldn't want to share, like addresses or phone numbers. Nobody else sees the story unless you publish it to Community.
For her 30th birthday, Emma and Biscuit the cat went bowling. Emma rolled the ball so majestically that it knocked down eleven tubas, and Biscuit was named Prime Minister.
